BIOPOLIS SL is a leading microbial biotechnology company based in Valencia (Spain). Our core competences are the isolation, selection, design, characterization, validation and production of microorganisms and cellular metabolites with applications in agro-feed, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. This results into the development of microbial strains, biopharmaceuticals, key organic compounds and green chemicals by strain and bioprocess design followed by fermentation and downstream process development and the production of microbial metabolites at an industrial scale: selection and production of enzymes for industrial applications, overexpression of recombinant protein in microbial systems, overproduction of synthesis intermediates and APIs by fermentation.

 

BIOPOLIS is devoted to the obtaining of microorganisms and microbial metabolites of industrial interest through biotransformation, under contract research and manufacturing projects for the major industrial companies of chemical, food and pharmaceutical sectors. During the past 10 years, a large range of different projects for the obtaining of microbial metabolites and organic compounds were conducted by BIOPOLIS. BIOPOLIS has also previously participated in two EU-funded projects and is currently participating in FP7-KBBE projects and coordinating 3rd ERA-IB POAP consortium, devoted to bioprocesses for obtaining polymers and building blocks, such as alcholols and organic acids. As a result, several patent applications have been filed or exclusively licensed for explotation. Finally, BIOPOLIS has also been in charge of several public funded research consortia at national and local level.  The main role of Biopolis in the consortium will be mass production of DCs (WP9, task 9.1). BIOPOLIS will develop, validate and scale-up a manufacturing process for the selected enzymes (scaffoldins and selected cellulases) using the previously designed strains. BIOPOLIS will be also in charge of producing the DCs (in the range of gr) for the initial scaling-up steps in task 9.2.

Education: she is a Chemical Engineer, specialized in Chemical Processes, and developed her PhD working in the heterologous expression and metabolic-based, structured modeling of glycosidases for biofuel and biocatalysis applications, in Technical University in Valencia (Dpt. Automatics and System Engineering, UPV).

 

Interests: Dr. Tortajada has 10 years of experience in microbial biotechnology as a permanent staff research member at Biopolis, focusing in protein overexpression in microbial hosts and strain and bioprocess design for high-added value biochemical and bulk chemicals overproduction, such as oligosaccharides, vitamins, nucleotides, enzymes, polyhydroxyalkanoates and alcohols.

 

Role in CellulosomePlus: Exploitation Manager. Mass production of DCs (WP9). BIOPOLIS will develop, validate and scale-up a manufacturing process for the selected cellulosomal components (scaffoldins and cellulases) using the previously designed strains. BIOPOLIS will be also in charge of producing the DCs for the initial scaling-up steps.
